DocSpring vs DocuSign
Compare PDF generation, embedded signing, signer delivery, and envelope-based pricing.
Our take
DocuSign is the signing platform your customers already recognize, and the eSignature API is mature. It sends the emails, handles reminders, produces a Certificate of Completion, and has every certification a procurement team could ask for. Its sales-quoted Enhanced plan adds embedded signing, HIPAA BAAs, and a choice of five data regions. If signing is the product and the brand on the envelope matters, nothing here replaces it.
As a document API it is expensive and indirect. Developer plans start at $50 a month billed annually for 40 envelopes and reach $480 for bulk send. There is no endpoint that returns a filled PDF, no template versioning, and completed documents are sealed rather than editable. DocSpring fills PDFs from JSON for a per-PDF price, embeds the field editor and forms, and includes signing with an audit trail, with your application sending the emails. Choose DocuSign when the signing workflow drives the decision. Choose DocSpring, or both together, when document generation does.
PDF generation and the eSignature API
DocuSign's eSignature API manages documents, recipients, and signing events within envelopes. It is the right tool when the signing process is the main requirement or your organization already uses DocuSign. DocSpring fills existing PDFs, generates HTML documents, and collects signatures through Data Requests.
This page compares DocSpring with the eSignature API, not every product in DocuSign's agreement platform. DocuSign's document generation and web forms are separate add-ons. For many applications the useful comparison is whether to use DocSpring for filling and DocuSign for signing, rather than replacing one with the other.
Choose DocSpring when document filling drives the workflow
Your app owns the customer relationship and needs to generate PDFs, collect missing fields, and embed signing. It handles signer authentication and sends notifications while DocSpring records the signing events, all for a per-PDF price.
Choose DocuSign when the signing workflow drives the decision
You need envelope-based recipient management, provider-sent signing emails and reminders, or a signing service already approved by your organization, and the envelope pricing fits your volume.

A dedicated integration is different from connecting an API through a generic HTTP action. Plan requirements and product boundaries are noted in the cells.
Fill an agreement, then collect two signatures
Suppose a customer and an account manager must sign the same application. Track the document-generation step separately from the two people completing their fields.
In DocSpring
Upload the PDF, map the customer data, and assign each person's fields to a separate Data Request. Your application supplies the known values and creates the submission.
Authenticate each participant and send a signing link or embed the form. Record the notification and authentication details, then handle completion after all required Data Requests are finished.
In DocuSign
Create an envelope with the document, recipients, and tabs, or use a reusable template with recipient roles. Prefill the known fields and set the recipient routing order required by your process.
Choose remote signing with email delivery or create an embedded recipient view. Use Connect events to update your application, and retain the completed document and Certificate of Completion.
Generate the application with DocSpring
This request demonstrates filling the PDF before a signing step. To sign in DocSpring, add Data Requests. To sign in DocuSign, pass the generated PDF into an envelope and configure its recipients and tabs.
curl --fail-with-body \
"https://sync.api.docspring.com/api/v1/templates/${DOCSPRING_TEMPLATE_ID}/submissions" \
--user "${DOCSPRING_TEST_TOKEN_ID}:${DOCSPRING_TEST_TOKEN_SECRET}" \
--header 'Content-Type: application/json' \
--data '{
"test": true,
"data": {
"customer_name": "Mira Patel",
"customer_email": "[email protected]"
}
}'
Set the environment variables to your template ID and test API credentials. Accounts in our EU region send requests to sync.api-eu.docspring.com instead. The response includes a download URL for a watermarked PDF. See the request and response guide.
Test a declined signature, a corrected email address, and a signer who returns later. A working PDF-generation request is only the first part of a reliable signing integration.
Envelopes against PDFs
DocSpring
The Starter plan is $49 per month for 50 live PDFs, then 25c per additional PDF. Larger plans lower the per-PDF price. Every plan includes unlimited templates, users, and watermarked test PDFs, and there is a free trial with no card required.
See all DocSpring plansDocuSign
With annual billing, which DocuSign says saves up to 44% over monthly billing, the developer Starter plan is $50 a month for a starting allowance of 40 envelopes a month, Intermediate is $300 for 100 envelopes with branding, and Advanced is $480 with bulk send and PowerForms for the API. Envelopes beyond the allowance are pay-as-you-go at a rate the page does not publish. A free developer sandbox covers testing.
An envelope counts once sent, whether or not it is completed, and can hold several documents and recipients. Document Generation and Web Forms are separate paid add-ons.
DocuSign pricing pageFor 500 agreements a month, DocuSign needs at least the $300 Intermediate plan, billed annually, plus overage for 400 envelopes at an unpublished rate, and embedded signing needs the sales-quoted Enhanced plan. DocSpring's 1,000-PDF plan covers generating and signing the same 500 agreements, with two PDFs each, for a published price, with your application sending the signing emails. If you keep DocuSign for signing and use DocSpring for generation, budget for both.
Replacing or keeping DocuSign in your workflow
Start by listing the signing capabilities your application uses: recipient roles, delivery, authentication, reminders, audit records, and any organizational approval requirements. Test those requirements before treating a change of signing service as an API endpoint swap.
To move signing to DocSpring, recreate PDF fields and participant assignments, then implement authentication and notifications in your app. Preserve completed envelopes and Certificates of Completion with their historical records; generating a new PDF does not recreate the original signing evidence.
You can also keep DocuSign for signatures. Generate or fill the PDF in DocSpring, download it, and attach it to the DocuSign envelope. This is useful when document preparation needs change but your approved signing process should stay in place.
Questions about DocuSign alternatives
Can DocSpring replace DocuSign for embedded signing?
For many applications, yes. Data Requests support embedded signing with multiple participants and an audit trail, and are included in the per-PDF price. Your app must handle authentication and send notifications, and you lose DocuSign's brand recognition on the envelope. Check any identity verification or organizational requirements before switching.
Can I generate documents in DocSpring and sign them in DocuSign?
Yes. Download the PDF generated by DocSpring and use it as a document in a DocuSign envelope. Map the signing fields in DocuSign and keep the IDs from both systems with your application record.
Does DocuSign have an API that just fills a PDF?
No. The eSignature API creates envelopes; to get a filled PDF you send an envelope and download its documents afterwards, and each envelope counts against your allowance. DocSpring returns the filled PDF from one request.
