DocSpring vs DocuSeal

Compare a signing product you can self-host with a document API that collects signatures.

Our take

DocuSeal is the best value in signing. The open-source edition is free to self-host with a basic API, the cloud Pro plan is $20 per user, and API or embedded completions cost 20 cents each. It sends the emails, keeps an audit certificate, supports DOCX and HTML templates on Pro, has verified n8n and Make apps, offers US and EU clouds, and holds SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 for the cloud. For a signing-first product on a budget, it is hard to beat.

It is not a generation API. No call returns a filled PDF without a signing submission, there is no batch endpoint, no visual editor, no per-document retention, and embedding, HTML templates, and conditional fields all require Pro. DocSpring is the reverse. Fill any PDF or HTML template from JSON at volume, embed the field editor on every plan, and add Data Requests when a signature is needed, with your app sending the emails. Choose DocuSeal when most documents need a signature. Choose DocSpring when most do not.

PDF filling and signing workflows

DocuSeal centers on document signing, with hosted and self-hosted options, an embedded builder, and an API. It can prefill fields and create signing templates from HTML or DOCX. DocSpring centers on filling PDFs and generating documents, with Data Requests for collecting missing information and signatures.

There is real overlap for an application that fills a PDF and asks a customer to sign it. Compare how each handles the surrounding process: who sends the invitation, how your app authenticates the signer, and what you need to run if you self-host.

Choose DocSpring for generation and app-managed signing

Your product generates many PDFs that do not require signatures, alongside documents that do. Keep the field mapping and HTML layouts in one service, and have your application manage signer access and notifications for one per-PDF price.

Choose DocuSeal for a dedicated signing workflow

You want a signing service with provider-sent invitations, an embedded signing interface, and a self-hosted option, and you are happy with per-user plus per-completion pricing.

Fill an application and collect one signature

Your application knows the customer's name and email. The customer must review the filled form and sign it. Compare what your code sends, who emails the customer, and what you get back.

In DocSpring

Upload the PDF, map the fields, and create a submission with the known values and a Data Request for the signature field. Your app sends the signing link or embeds the form with a one-time token.

DocSpring records authentication, viewing, and signing events and generates the final PDF when the Data Request completes. A webhook tells your app it is done.

In DocuSeal

Create a template from the PDF, then create a submission with the customer as a submitter and the known values prefilled. DocuSeal emails the customer, or on Pro you embed the signing form.

When the customer signs, a webhook fires and you download the completed document and its audit certificate. Each API or embedded completion costs 20 cents on top of the Pro seat.

Fill the application with DocSpring

This request fills the known fields. Add a Data Request to the same submission to collect the signature.

curl --fail-with-body \
  "https://sync.api.docspring.com/api/v1/templates/${DOCSPRING_TEMPLATE_ID}/submissions" \
  --user "${DOCSPRING_TEST_TOKEN_ID}:${DOCSPRING_TEST_TOKEN_SECRET}" \
  --header 'Content-Type: application/json' \
  --data '{
    "test": true,
    "data": {
      "customer_name": "Mira Patel",
      "customer_email": "[email protected]"
    }
  }'

Set the environment variables to your template ID and test API credentials. Accounts in our EU region send requests to sync.api-eu.docspring.com instead. The response includes a download URL for a watermarked PDF. See the request and response guide.

Test a customer who never signs, one who signs on a phone, and a form that changes after you have live submissions. Then count how many of your documents need no signature at all.

Per user plus per completion, against per PDF

DocSpring

The Starter plan is $49 per month for 50 live PDFs, then 25c per additional PDF. Larger plans lower the per-PDF price. Every plan includes unlimited templates, users, and watermarked test PDFs, and there is a free trial with no card required.

DocuSeal

DocuSeal's cloud Basic plan is free with 10 signature request emails a month and no API. Cloud Pro is $20 per user per month, or $200 a year, with unlimited requests, and API or embedded completions cost $0.20 per completed document. Sandbox completions are free. The open-source edition is free to self-host, and Pro On-Premises is $240 per user per year with the same per-completion fees for API use.

Bulk send includes 50 signatures a month, then $0.20 each. There is no charge for documents that are never completed.

DocuSeal pricing page

For 1,000 signed documents a month through the API with one Pro user, DocuSeal is $20 plus $200 in completions, or $220. DocSpring's 1,000-PDF plan is $99 per month and includes Data Requests, with your app sending the emails. If you also generate 5,000 unsigned PDFs, DocuSeal is the wrong tool for those. DocSpring's Business plan is $249 per month for 5,000 PDFs, then 5c per additional PDF, which covers all 6,000 documents.

Moving DocuSeal workflows to DocSpring

Upload the same PDFs to DocSpring and place or import the fields. DocuSeal text tags map naturally to DocSpring field names. Recreate any conditional fields as DocSpring conditional rules.

Replace submission creation with a DocSpring submission plus Data Requests for each signer. Your application takes over sending the signing links and recording how each signer was authenticated. Embed the signing form with a one-time token where DocuSeal's form component was used.

Keep completed DocuSeal documents and their signature certificates as the record for historical agreements. Export them before closing the account or decommissioning a self-hosted instance.
