DocSpring vs APITemplate.io

Compare Jinja2 templates and image generation with Liquid templates and existing-PDF filling.

Our take

APITemplate.io is a well-priced generator for documents and social images you design in its own editor or in HTML with Jinja2. It has SOC 2, four regional endpoints, and every major automation connector, and its PDF Basic plan gives you 3,000 PDFs a month for $19 billed annually. For marketing-style PDFs and images from JSON, it is a strong choice.

What it does not do is start from a PDF you already have. There is no form filling, no embedded editor, no template versioning, no forms, and no signing, and HIPAA is not offered. DocSpring's Starter plan is more expensive per PDF, and it includes filling any existing PDF from a drag-and-drop editor, versioned templates, embedded editing, and signatures. Choose APITemplate.io for generating new documents and images cheaply. Choose DocSpring when official forms, customer PDFs, or signing are part of the job.

HTML templates and visual editing

APITemplate.io offers HTML/CSS templates with Jinja2, a visual PDF editor, and image generation. It suits teams that want to create layouts in the service and automate the output. DocSpring fills existing PDFs and uses HTML/CSS with Liquid for documents whose content needs to grow.

Both can generate an invoice from JSON, but the template languages and editing workflows differ. DocSpring's visual editor places fields on an existing PDF. It does not provide the WYSIWYG document layout builder available in APITemplate.io.

Choose DocSpring for supplied PDFs and Liquid templates

Your workflow includes official forms or customer-provided PDFs. Use the original file as the layout, and keep dynamic HTML documents in versioned templates alongside it.

Choose APITemplate.io for visual editing or image generation

Your team wants a visual PDF editor, already uses Jinja2, or needs automated images as well as PDFs. Check whether the PDF-only or combined image-and-PDF plan matches your outputs.

Build an invoice with optional notes and line items

Use a customer record, an items array, and optional notes. The PDF should grow with the number of items while leaving out the notes section when it is empty.

In DocSpring

Create an HTML template with a Liquid loop for items and a condition around the notes. Define the data schema, preview short and long invoices, then publish the template.

Send JSON to the submission endpoint. You can pin a published version while testing a revised layout in a draft.

In APITemplate.io

Choose the HTML editor for a Jinja2-based invoice or use the visual PDF editor. In HTML, bind the customer fields, loop over items, and add a condition for notes.

Generate the document with the template ID and input data. Select a regional endpoint and decide whether to wait for the response or use asynchronous generation with a webhook.

The invoice in Liquid

The small template below shows the line-item loop. Add the corresponding fields to the DocSpring template schema before sending the request.

<h1>Invoice for {{ customer_name | escape }}</h1>
<table>
  <tr><th>Description</th><th>Amount (USD)</th></tr>
  {% for item in items %}
    <tr>
      <td>{{ item.description | escape }}</td>
      <td>{{ item.amount | currency }}</td>
    </tr>
  {% endfor %}
</table>
curl --fail-with-body \
  "https://sync.api.docspring.com/api/v1/templates/${DOCSPRING_TEMPLATE_ID}/submissions" \
  --user "${DOCSPRING_TEST_TOKEN_ID}:${DOCSPRING_TEST_TOKEN_SECRET}" \
  --header 'Content-Type: application/json' \
  --data '{
    "test": true,
    "data": {
      "customer_name": "Mira Patel",
      "items": [
        { "description": "Annual inspection", "amount": 120 },
        { "description": "Replacement filter", "amount": 35 }
      ]
    }
  }'

Set the environment variables to your template ID and test API credentials. Accounts in our EU region send requests to sync.api-eu.docspring.com instead. The response includes a download URL for a watermarked PDF. See the request and response guide.

Test currency formatting, empty arrays, and missing notes in both versions. Similar-looking template delimiters do not mean Jinja2 filters and Liquid filters behave the same way.

Cheap generations, capped templates

DocSpring

The Starter plan is $49 per month for 50 live PDFs, then 25c per additional PDF. Larger plans lower the per-PDF price. Every plan includes unlimited templates, users, and watermarked test PDFs, and there is a free trial with no card required.

APITemplate.io

APITemplate.io's free plan includes 50 PDFs or images a month and 3 templates. PDF Basic is $19 per month billed annually, or $24 monthly, for 3,000 PDFs and 20 templates. Standard is $69 billed annually ($89 monthly) and adds teams. Enterprise is $139 billed annually ($179 monthly) and adds unlimited templates and delivery to your own storage. Combined image-and-PDF plans start at $29 billed annually.

Enterprise plans offer opt-in pay-as-you-go billing for usage above the included allowance. It is not enabled by default; contact APITemplate.io to arrange it. Without that option, the pricing FAQ directs customers to upgrade when credits run out, with email alerts at 80% and 100% of the allowance.

APITemplate.io pricing page

A service producing 2,000 invoices across 30 customer-specific layouts fits PDF Basic's 3,000 generations but not its 20-template limit, so it needs Standard at $69 billed annually or $89 monthly. DocSpring's plans include unlimited templates, and its Professional plan is $99 per month for 1,000 PDFs, then 10c per additional PDF. Per generated PDF, APITemplate.io is cheaper; per feature, DocSpring includes form filling, versioning, embedding, and signing that APITemplate.io does not offer.

Moving APITemplate.io templates to DocSpring

For an HTML template, preserve the CSS and sample JSON, then translate Jinja2 expressions into Liquid. Review filters, loop variables, conditionals, and date or currency formatting individually. Similar syntax can hide different behavior.

A visual-editor template needs to be recreated in HTML/CSS, or exported as a fixed PDF if its layout does not need to grow. A static export cannot retain a visual table's dynamic layout behavior.

Replace template IDs, API authentication, and webhook payload handling in your automation. Test the same sample data in the old and new templates, including a document that spans several pages. Keep image-generation workflows in APITemplate.io if your application still needs them.

Questions about APITemplate.io alternatives

Can I copy a Jinja2 template directly into DocSpring?

The HTML and CSS are reusable, but the template logic needs review. DocSpring uses Liquid, so filters, expressions, and loop metadata can need changes. Start with a representative invoice and compare the rendered values as well as the layout.

Does DocSpring have the same visual editor?

No. DocSpring's editor maps fields onto an existing PDF. For a new layout with paragraphs or tables that grow, use HTML/CSS and Liquid. APITemplate.io is a closer fit if a WYSIWYG layout builder is a requirement.

Can APITemplate.io fill a PDF form I already have?

No. It generates new PDFs from its templates. DocSpring lets you upload the existing PDF, drag fields onto it, and fill it from JSON.
