Word Templates

You can now make templates from Word documents. Upload a .docx with tags in it, such as {{ customer.name }}, and each submission fills in the tags with your data and makes a Word document, an OpenDocument file (.odt) or a PDF.

Create a Word template

Click Create template, then drop your Word document on the upload area, or choose Word document under Or start from a blank page to write one in DocSpring. DocSpring adds a field for each tag it finds. Headings, tables, headers and footers, page numbers and pictures stay as they are.

Tags can format dates and numbers, show text only when a condition is true, repeat a table row for each item in a list, and add pictures, signatures, barcodes and QR codes. Tags and filters lists them all.

Edit the document in DocSpring

The template editor shows the document as a page you can edit, with its headers and footers, and saves your changes as you type. The Preview tab shows it filled in with sample data. For anything the editor doesn't do, edit the document in Word, Google Docs or LibreOffice, then upload the new version under Settings > Word document: your fields and their settings stay.

Word documents, OpenDocument files and PDFs

Choose what each submission makes under Settings > Output. With API v2, a submission can ask for more than one with output_formats, such as ["docx", "pdf"], and its files lists each one. A submission that made only its Word document can make its PDF later without using credits again: choose Make PDF in the Download menu on the submission's page, or call POST /submissions/{submission_id}/generate_files.

OpenDocument works both ways: you can create a template from an .odt saved in LibreOffice, and submissions can make .odt files.

The AWS S3, Google Drive, Dropbox and Box integrations can upload Word documents and OpenDocument files too: choose them under File Formats in the integration's settings.

Pricing

A Word template submission uses 20 credits per unit, the same as a filled PDF form, whichever files it makes. Its pages aren't counted, so a long document costs the same as a short one. See How credits work.
