Make a PDF fillable
Turn the boxes on a PDF's pages into form fields, so anyone can fill it in with a PDF reader. The PDF stays in your browser. An image of each page goes to DocSpring's field detector and is deleted as soon as its fields are found.

About the tool
The fields are found by the model that sets up the fields of DocSpring's PDF templates. Your browser draws each page with Mozilla's PDF.js and adds the fields with pdf-lib.
Need the opposite? Our free PDF flattener draws a PDF's form fields into its pages, so nobody can change them.
Questions about making PDFs fillable
More free toolsHow do I make a PDF fillable?
Drop the PDF on the box at the top of this page and choose Find form fields. The tool finds the text boxes, checkboxes and signature lines on each page and adds a form field for each one. Then download the fillable PDF and open it in any PDF reader to type in its fields and tick its boxes.
Is it free?
Yes, with no sign-up, for PDFs of up to 20 pages. A DocSpring account names the fields as well, and fills the PDF from a form, a signature request or your app.
Is my PDF kept private?
Your PDF stays in your browser. To find the fields, your browser sends an image of each page to DocSpring's servers in the US. Each image is deleted once its fields are found, or within an hour if something goes wrong. Where the fields are on each page is kept for an hour, for your browser to collect.
What are the fields called?
detected_field_1, detected_field_2 and so on, in reading order, so the Tab key moves through them from the top of each page. A PDF reader doesn't need names to fill a form in. In a DocSpring account, AI names each field after what it asks for.
What if a field is missing or in the wrong place?
The detector finds most fields, but it can miss one or find a box that a form doesn't mean to be filled in. In a DocSpring account, you can add, move and remove fields in the editor.
Can I make a scanned PDF fillable?
Yes. The detector looks at each page as an image, so it finds the fields on a scan too. The fields go over the scanned page, but the page's own text isn't made searchable.
What if my PDF already has form fields?
They stay as they are. The tool adds a field only where the PDF doesn't have one.
Fill your PDF forms from your app
Upload a PDF form, and DocSpring sets up its fields. Then fill it from a form, a signature request or the API.
